Learning Effective Leadership
with Guest Faculty, Ann Lieberman, Senior Scholar, Stanford University and Emeritus Professor, Teachers College, Columbia University
SEMINAR OVERVIEW:
The Santa Fe Leadership Center is pleased to announce a seminar for teachers who wish to strengthen their position in their schools as effective and productive leaders.
Whether leading a classroom, a department, a division or an entire school community, every teacher has numerous opportunities to influence the environment in which he or she works. In addition to knowing yourself and your inner workings extremely well, there are some particular skills required to be sensitive to the many differences among colleagues while remaining strongly connected to the mission of the school and your own personal and professional values.
Among the many characteristics of the successful teacher/leader is the ability to be an ally of the administration without being perceived as having sold out to the establishment. This presumes that the teacher is in concert with how the school is being led and managed. If you are not, then a different position is obviously preferred but not necessarily adversarial in nature. Open resistance or guerilla warfare are not welcome in most schools.
Other skills that are particularly welcome in the teacher/leader are the ability to communicate clearly, to understand how to be persuasive without being pushy, to be transparent about passion and purpose beyond yourself, and to benefit from your professional development so that it is in alignment with both your short and long term goals.
We are honored to be joined by Guest Faculty, Ann Lieberman. Ann is an
emeritus professor from Teachers College, Columbia University. She was a Senior Scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for the past ten years and is now a Senior Scholar at Stanford University. She is widely known for her work in the areas of teacher leadership, networks and school/university partnerships and the problems and prospects of educational change. Her recent books include: Teacher Leadership and Teachers in Professional Communities (with Lynne Miller) and How Teachers Become Leaders (with Linda Friedrich). She is a past president of AERA. Her unique contribution has been that she has been able to go between schools and universities – embracing the dualities that plague our field – theory and practice as well as the lack of connection between research policy and practice. She has fashioned a way to be both scholar and activist, practitioner and theoretician.
A hallmark of the SFLC Seminars is the interactive atmosphere that defines the time together. The staff has been recognized as superb facilitators and they bring years of experience in schools knowing what works best to accomplish your stated objectives. Get ready to experience an uplifting and encouraging experience by taking this opportunity to build your repertoire of know how and can do.
